FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How many sessions will I need?

This is impossible to answer before we meet. If and when we begin working together we will discuss this and agree on an initial number of sessions. At the end of that series of sessions we will discuss progress and agree on further sessions if that seems right.

How does psychotherapy differ from counselling?

There are no "official" definitions to compare so it's impossible to answer this in a way that everyone would agree with. Personally I see counselling as usually tackling a single issue over a shorter term, while psychotherapy tends to be oriented towards deeper work over a longer time span, however there may be major exceptions. Ultimately whether it works is more important than what it's called!

Does having psychotherapy mean that I've failed?

Personally I really don't see it that way, it just means you believe you need help in improving your life situation, and needing help is simply human and not something to be ashamed of. Happily nowadays the fact that many of the rich and famous choose to go to psychotherapists is well known and attitudes are changing as people realize how valuable it can be.

What if I've still got doubts and misgivings?

I quite understand that you might do. Starting psychotherapy can be quite a daunting undertaking, and a big commitment on all levels: emotional, practical, not to mention financial. In the end it's a decision for you alone. All I can suggest is that you take up the offer of an initial consultation to discuss the decision and perhaps try some initial sessions so that you can make a more informed choice.
